We’ve all heard it—or thought it:
“If I get the promotion, I’ll be happy.”
“If I buy the bigger house, I’ll be happy.”
“If I lose the weight, I’ll finally be happy.”
These are some of the most common myths about happiness. They’re rooted in a belief that external achievements lead to internal peace. But what happens when we get the title, the house, or the so-called perfect body… and still feel unfulfilled?
At South by Southwest (SXSW), I had the opportunity to explore this topic alongside three extraordinary thought leaders— Karen Guggenheim, Alla Klymenko and Dr. Michael Steger. Our panel went deep into what happiness really is (and isn’t), challenging outdated narratives and highlighting evidence-based pathways to well-being.
We talked about how:
Purpose fuels sustainable joy more than promotions ever could.
Connection and belonging matter more than material upgrades.
Equity and systems of support are essential to collective and individual well-being.
And how toxic positivity actually undermines real growth.
I'm grateful for the opportunity to share space with such an incredible group of experts who are not only shaping the conversation but reshaping how we pursue happiness—both personally and professionally.
Because here’s the truth: Happiness isn’t what you think. And that’s exactly why we need to keep talking about it.
