What If They Made a Mistake? Navigating Imposter Syndrome as a Latina Leader

Imposter syndrome can show up even in our proudest moments—especially for women, Latinas, and professionals who’ve often felt like the “other” in the room. In this reflection, I share how I’ve learned to rewrite the inner dialogue and embrace my presence at the table as power, not accident.

"They Must Have Made a Mistake, Inviting Me to the Table."

The thought echoed in my mind, quiet but persistent.

"Surely, they meant to invite someone else."
"Why would they want me here?"
"Did they really mean to include me?"
"I can't believe I'm actually supposed to be here."
"Am I really the right person for this?"

If you’ve ever thought this, know this: you’re not alone.

As a Latina, a woman, and someone who has often felt like the “only” or the “other” in professional spaces, imposter syndrome became a constant companion.
Even when I was achieving big things.
Even when I had earned my seat at the table.

Especially then.

How I Started to Quiet My Inner Critic

Overcoming imposter syndrome hasn’t been a one-time fix.
It’s a daily practice—a mix of reflection, unlearning, and radical self-belief.

Here’s what’s helped me:

Acknowledging the self-doubt, instead of pushing it down
Identifying the triggers, especially in high-stakes or high-visibility spaces
Documenting my achievements, so I had proof (for myself!) that I belonged
Surrounding myself with people who reminded me of my value
Reframing my identity as a Latina woman as a superpower, not a setback

It was at the LULAC UTD Convention. I was there representing my company—and I was speaking on the same stage as Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton.

Incredible, right?
But even then, that voice crept in:

"Am I really supposed to be here?"

The answer, then and now, is yes.
Yes, I was.
Yes, I am.

And so are you.
